Field Notes

field notes from inside the game — what the field does when thirty people stop trying to be interesting.

FIELD NOTE 01 Costa Rica JULY 11, 2021

The envelope was on the pillow before I woke.

One line inside.

Today you are the Cartographer.

Nothing else.

Good.

The interesting maps never come with instructions.

The trail wasn’t there yesterday.

The jungle is honest about that.

It only shows you the paths you’re ready to walk.

We carried the artifact in turns.

Waxed canvas. Heavier than it looked.

No one opened it.

Opening it wasn’t the point.

Carrying it was.

The first gate asked a question.

The second asked us to dance.

The third asked us to walk into the fire.

Not the idea of fire.

The fire.

Strange, how fast the nervous system reorganizes

once the body has already voted.

Someone said the game was getting harder.

Someone else corrected them.

The game isn’t getting harder.

You’re getting more visible.

By day four the coincidences stopped pretending to be coincidences.

The symbol I decoded fit the relic she’d carried since the river.

The person I’d avoided all week held the piece I came here missing.

Fire behaves differently when it’s part of the curriculum.

The water off Playa Negra remembers things.

The jungle edits people.

Some identities make it back to the airport.

Most don’t.

Usually the ones I was relieved to set down.

Seven days.

Thirty three of us.

I didn’t come home with photographs.

I came home with reference points.

And a suspicion I can’t shake

that reality had been leaving me breadcrumbs

far longer than I was awake enough to see them.

FIELD NOTE 02 Egypt MARCH 15, 2023
The Messenger

Day one, I could still tell you the date.

By day three the calendar had quietly stopped mattering.

The scroll named me the Messenger.

A messenger with no message yet.

That is the trick.

You carry the role before you understand it.

We moved south. Cairo, then the river, then further.

The group built a way of speaking that would sound insane at home.

Half of it was silence.

Heat does something to an argument.

By noon nobody was defending a position.

There was nothing left to defend.

Only the next thing to do, and the people doing it beside you.

One night in the Sinai, no roof, the sand still warm.

Someone laughed at a joke nobody had said out loud.

We all understood it anyway.

That is the part I cannot explain to anyone who wasn’t there.

The role kept handing me the exact situations I had spent years arranging my life to avoid.

Not cruelly.

Precisely.

As if the story had read my file.

Stone keeps records.

The temple wall had outlasted every empire that came to explain it.

Standing under it, my problems changed size.

Somewhere past the middle, I stopped performing the Messenger.

I just was it.

And the message arrived. Not in words. In the body, all at once.

Eleven days.

Seventy seven of us walked in as strangers.

We did not walk out as friends.

Friends is too small a word for it.

I brought home no souvenirs.

I brought home a different relationship to time,

and seventy six people who know exactly what I mean when I say that.
